Frequently asked questions

If the answer you need is not here, the documentation goes further, and the team reads the support address.

Is JMXPress a hosted service or does it run on our own machines?

It runs on a machine you control. The team here runs it on a server inside their own network, with testers reaching it in a browser and recording through an agent on their own laptop. There is no multi-tenant public instance you sign up to.

Which load testing engines does it support?

JMeter, k6 and Gatling. JMeter is the one everything else is built around: recording produces a JMeter plan, and the converters target JMX. k6 and Gatling scripts are generated from the same material.

Do I need to install JMeter myself?

The server needs a JMeter installation to run tests with, and its location is set in the machine’s configuration. The browser does not need anything. Recording from your own laptop needs the JMXPress agent, which dials out to the server - it never listens for a connection.

Which APM tools can it read?

Dynatrace, AppDynamics, Datadog, New Relic, AWS CloudWatch and Azure Application Insights. You supply a read-only credential for the one you already use; it is encrypted at rest and is never sent back to a browser.

Does it store our APM credentials safely?

They are sealed with a key held on the server, outside the database row, and the pages that show a connection show which secrets are set rather than their values. Nothing that reaches a browser, a log, a report or a generated test plan contains one.

Can it collect heap dumps and thread dumps?

Yes, from a computer running the JMXPress agent - and only when that computer has been configured to allow it. Diagnostics are off unless somebody turns them on in the agent’s own settings file, log folders have to be listed explicitly, and a request for a file outside them is refused on that machine rather than trusted not to be asked for.

How is data kept separate between teams?

Every tenant-owned table carries an organisation and is covered by a row-level security policy in PostgreSQL, so the separation is enforced by the database rather than by remembering to add a WHERE clause.

How much does it cost?

Plans and prices are not published. There is no billing in the product today: access is arranged with the team, and an administrator grants it. The pricing page says the same thing rather than showing figures that do not exist yet.

How do I get support?

Write to the support address on the contact page. It reaches the team directly; there is no ticketing system to learn.
